University Teacher in Wood Architecture
Department of Architecture
Hi, I am Jaakko Torvinen, a fresh graduate Architect from Aalto University. I live in Helsinki with my wife but originally I am from Finnish Lapland. I completed my studies with top grades, receiving from master’s thesis grade of 5/5. My most important work is Pikku-Finlandia, a temporary transportable wooden building for the use of Finlandia Hall during its renovation. It’s specialty is whole trees as load-bearing columns. While I was wading in the snowy forest to choose pine trees to be those columns I knew I had chosen the right profession. I started teaching at Aalto University as a University Teacher at Wood Architecture same time I graduated. Before architecture studies I worked as a real estate agent. My diverse work history gives me a broad perspective on design. I applied to study architecture because I wanted a creative profession with which I could make an impact on the world. I reseived honorary mention in the International Architectural Competition for the Sara Hildén Art Museum. A total of over 470 entries participated which amount is one of the largest in the history of architectural competitions in Finland. I love to paint and draw and my favorite hobbies are ice swimming and brazilian jiujitsu.
