Katve (meaning ‘shade’ or ‘cover’ in Finnish), was initiated in January of 2020 by the Wood Program. The pavilion
was developed as a proof of concept for the structural system for Pikku-Finlandia in central Helsinki.
The pines were selected from the forest, documented and felled. After felling, the bark and cambium layer of the trees were removed with a pressure washer. After debarking, the trees were 3D-scanned and the joints were designed. The joints were carved into the trees on an NC workstation.
Katve-paviljonki rakennettiin Wood Programin kanssa keväällä 2020. Paviljonki toteutettiin samaan aikaan, kun Pikku-Finlandiaa suunniteltiin. Paviljongin avulla opiskeltiin, miten puita voidaan käyttää kantavina pilareina ja mitä tulee huomioida prosessin eri vaiheissa.
Oksaiset männyt valittiin metsästä, dokumentoitiin ja kaadettiin. Kaatamisen jälkeen puiden kaarna ja nilakerros poistettiin painepesurilla. Kuorimisen jälkeen puut 3D-skannattiin ja niihin suunniteltiin liitokset. Liitokset kaiverrettiin puihin NC-työasemalla.

Trees were peeled with high-pressure washer, 250 bar. The high-pressure washer had rotating nozzle to prevent damage to the wood surface.
Puut kuorittiin korkeapainepesurilla, 250 bar. Painepesurissa oli pyörivä suutin puupinnan vaurioitumisen estämiseksi.
Dovetail joints were carved into the top end of the trees and branches with an NC station. The video is sped up.
Puiden ja oksien yläpäähän kaiverrettiin lohenpyrstöliitokset NC-asemalla. Videota on nopeutettu.
